WeatherXM D2 Mesh Solar-Powered Weather Station for Meshtastic and MeshCore

WeatherXM has revealed the D2 Mesh, an off-grid weather station kit built to report conditions over a Meshtastic or MeshCore LoRa mesh instead of Wi-Fi or a cellular plan. The station measures temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, rainfall, wind speed and direction, gusts, light, solar radiation, and UV levels, then sends readings out over an SX1262 LoRa transceiver that can cover several kilometers under clear line of sight, farther if another node relays the signal.

What’s inside

The sensor unit runs on an nRF5340 dual-core microcontroller with 16 MB of external flash alongside the LoRa radio. A u-blox MAX-M10S GNSS receiver handles positioning, and a QMI8658A accelerometer and gyroscope watch for tilt, movement, tampering, or a station that has been moved from where it was installed. Power comes from a built-in 6.5 V, 60 mA solar panel backed by batteries and a supercapacitor, so the whole thing is meant to run unattended.

The companion gateway pairs an ESP32-S3 with a second SX1262 radio and a four-inch touchscreen for viewing live readings on site. It logs history to a microSD card and exposes local MQTT and REST interfaces, so it can feed Home Assistant or another self-hosted setup without ever touching the internet. Connecting it to WeatherXM’s own cloud service is optional.

Three protocols to choose from

The notable part is the firmware. WeatherXM built a single codebase that can run its own LoRa protocol, Meshtastic, or MeshCore, and the active transport can be switched at runtime without rebuilding or reflashing anything. Reporting is adaptive too: expect hourly updates in stable weather, with the station stepping up to a report every five minutes when conditions start changing quickly.

WeatherXM says it will publish schematics, a bill of materials, packet specifications, and integration examples, along with the firmware source, before the device goes up for crowdfunding. A documented bootloader unlock will also let owners strip out WeatherXM’s software entirely and run something else if they choose.

Not for sale yet

There’s no price or release date attached to the D2 Mesh so far. WeatherXM is taking sign-ups for notifications ahead of a Crowd Supply campaign for anyone who wants to be first in line.
